About

Sherene Smith (they/them)

As a queer therapist who specializes in working with LGBTQ+ folks, I am passionate about helping individuals find happiness and healing in all aspects of life. I am licensed clinical social worker in both California and Massachusetts who specializes in sexuality and gender as well as trauma therapy. I value providing a safe and affirming space for individuals exploring their relational, gender and erotic diversity. My therapeutic style is warm, direct, attentive, and relationally focused. I believe that the therapeutic relationship forms a powerful foundation for change, allowing folks to explore their authentic selves and work towards empowerment. I am committed to acknowledging and addressing the impact of social location, recognizing that the intersection of our identities and cultural influences shapes our worldview. By undoing the harmful impacts of marginalization and oppression while emboldening our experiences of strength, resilience and joy, I believe we can create truly transformative change within our ourselves and our communities.

Experience
Professional Journey
Having graduated from the Smith School for Social Work with my Masters in Social Work, I am informed by psychodynamic therapy as the foundation of my practice. I am trained in EMDR therapy through the Trauma Institute and Cognitive Processing Therapy for PTSD from the Veterans Affairs Administration, both of which inform evidence-based trauma treatment for lasting change. My advanced certificate in Sex Therapy from the California Institute of Integral Studies equips me with in-depth knowledge of sexual health and intimacy issues further supported by consultation and training from sex therapists specializing in gender, erotic marginalization, relational diversity, and sexual health. My practice is enriched by my training in Internal Family Systems through the Queer and Trans Internal Family Systems project which provides a structured and integrated approach to understanding ourselves in a holistic way.

As a member of both the National Association of Social Workers and the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists, I engage in networks that support ongoing professional development while upholding the professional ethics and standards in my field.

Beyond my clinical work, I am an educator, having conducted trainings on LGBTQ+ therapeutic care, culturally informed co-occurring enhanced treatment, and the integration of mind-body practices in clinical work. This combination of clinical training and educational experience allows me to offer a uniquely comprehensive and culturally sensitive approach to therapy, particularly for clients dealing with trauma, relationship challenges, gender exploration, sexual wellbeing and more.
